Catching a glimpse of local baseball history

Carman Cardinals proved to be a hit with some highly talented athletes

By Rachael Smith For The Valley Leader The year 1948 was one of many noteworthy accomplishments and events for Carman and town residents. For instance, Paul Hiebert, a Carman resident, won the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour for his book, Sarah Binks. It was also the year that baseball of a high caliber was introduced to Carman by C.N. Bedford and Jimmie Harrison, who sponsored a tournament that was composed of eight teams. They also offered the largest amount of money in the history of Manitoba for a baseball tournament. This tournament showed how the community was interested in a high caliber baseball team. In 1949, the Carman Cardinals team was formed and they became part of the Manitoba Senior League (Brandon Greys, Elmwood, Winnipegs and the Veterans were also a part of the league). Several prominent and talented players (which were secured by Jack Stewart of the Detroit Red Wings hockey club) came from Detroit, including Sonny Andrews, Lillord Cobb, Bob Johnston, Johnny Caulfield, and Ron Teasley. Other players, such as Ernest Boushy and James Swanton, were from Manitoba. Lighting it up in 1949 Since the interest in the team was so high, flood lights were installed in 1949. And 1949 was also the year that the Carman Baseball Co. Ltd. was incorporated. For several years, the Carman Cardinals proved to be a crowd pleasing team as well as providing a high class of baseball. The Dufferin Historical Museum celebrates the Carman Cardinals by dedicating a portion of the museum to this amazing baseball team. The display includes photos of the team, souvenir books, and seven autographed baseballs
